Preface

This is perhaps the most recent series review on my site. Again, I give my profuse thanks to Ching Ching for providing me with the summary. =)

"Unreachable Zone of Darkness" is a Mainland production, but had actors from Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong (Michael To and Eddie Kwan), and China itself.

For those who are familiar with the 80's and the early 90's series, it's not difficult to name at least 10 series where Michael played a villain. Interestingly, with DIF (Detective Investigation Files) in the mid-90's being a smash hit and labeling him as a super star now, it is quite rare these days to see him playing another antagonist in a series. "Unreachable..." is no exception, as he is the protagonist of the show.

I smile to myself while observing this change. Had it been 15 years ago, Eddie and Michael's roles would have been switched. Not that I am insinuating that Eddie always played a protagonist, in fact, it was quite the opposite. This was my friend's response when I was talking to her about this serial -

Me: If this series was made 15 years ago, their roles would have been switched.

Xerces: No... they would both play villains. ^^

She remembers Eddie mostly from his not-so-likeable portrayals, such as in "Chut Toi Sheung Kiu." I guess this response was expected from her.

But still, Michael had always been a fantastic villain (especially with his hyena laugh), so I would not be surprised if his role in "Unreachable..." was switched with Eddie's.

Since Ching Ching seemed to like Eddie's performance in this serial, she focused her summary on Eddie's character. All the better for me!

Plot (by Ching Ching)

This contained the typical plot of 2 fathers of 2 sons, one poor and one rich, being switched around. As you can probably anticipate, these 2 sons would learn to hate each other. I thought that this show was not that bad, and I am, once again, impressed by Eddie's performance. To this day, I am still amazed at the way I can easily be touched by his situation. I would also like to commend Cheung Yun's performance. She did a superb job co-starring as Eddie's true lover.

This series officially starts off with Yun looking for Eddie. Of course, Eddie was in the midst of getting dressed after bedding yet another beautiful woman. Yun hands the woman a cheque for the months that she has been with Eddie. This cash means that she will have to break up with Eddie now that he is bored with her. Yun has not faced this type of situation for the first time. It has happened various times during the time that Yun has worked for Eddie.

Eddie is the second oldest sibling in the Sum family, which is a rich and prestigious family in Shanghai. He picks up every beautiful woman he sees in the streets such as actresses, models, etc., but the only woman he ever respects, protects, and truly cares for is Yun. She is not only his employee, but she and Eddie have known each other since they were young. Yun's dad is Eddie's dad's loyal employee and close friend. They share a past together. Throughout the years, Yun has fallen in love with Eddie, but Eddie does not know.

In the Sum family, his father, Sum Sing Teen, really looks up to him, as he is an intelligent boy, better than his sister. Thus, she is constantly jealous and tries to use every opportune time to usurp Eddie's position in the Sum company. Eddie truly loves his parents, concerned whenever his mother had a health problem.

Michael is from a poor family. He treats his parents with respect and honesty. He meets Yun, and eventually falls in love with her. Michael has another friend, who also happens to be Yun's great friend too, who loves him. (I forgot her name in the show. Probably because she is not too important.) Michael finally finds a job in the Sum company, but his parents greatly disapprove because of the past history they share with this family. His parents keep telling Michael that the Sum family are deceiving people and that he should avoid interacting with them at all costs. Michael becomes extremely upset because he wants to know why his parents, especially his father, became so enraged when he told them he found a job at the Sum company. In the end, though, his parents supported Michael, and Michael became an employee of Sum Ga Wai (Eddie).

Yun and her great friend also work in the company, and the two eventually meet up with each other and become quick friends as they have already met each other previously. As I have said, a love triangle has aroused. Yun loves Eddie and Eddie is afraid of loving Yun. Michael loves Yun and her friend loves Michael. Geez, could it get any worse.

Of course, Eddie refuses to acknowledge the fact that he loves Yun a lot. During meetings, he often tells her to cover up his date with a woman when he was suppose to be at a business meeting. During these situations, Yun spends the time alone in a restaurant while Eddie is having fun with another woman. When time is up, she goes home to show that she and Eddie have indeed been at a business meeting. Poor Yun! Eddie does not understand how sad and uncomfortable she feels every time she covers up for him. She would sacrifice anything for Eddie. In her room, Yun always looks at the present (I forgot what) that Eddie gave her when she is thinking about him. She truly, madly, and deeply is in love with him.

Eddie and Yun see each other every day at work, so that is why their love relationship is easily developed. I remember two incidents, which show that Eddie cares for Yun. One is when she did something that Eddie disliked, and he found out about it. I remember him saying that if it had been anyone else, that person would have been in for it good. Since it was she, it was OK. He did not yell at Yun.

The second incident is when Yun gets trapped in an elevator. After she is rescued, Eddie hastily runs down the escalator to see her. In an extremely concerned voice, he asks her if she is OK. He even wanted to hug her, but catching sight of all the other employees around her, he restrains himself. He even changes his voice to a business-like tone. Back home, Eddie phones to check on Yun. Yun knows for sure that Eddie loves her depite his other superficial girlfriend.

I think what initiated Yun's application of a test on Eddie is when he kissed her one night when he was drunk. Yun was jubilant after because she thought that she and Eddie would date now. The next day, back at work, Eddie denied his action, which really upset Yun. Therefore, Yun asked Michael to help her test Eddie and make him express his love for her. Michael promised, of course, but he felt awkward because he loved Yun too.

For many weeks, she pretended to date Michael. After work, she would hastily leave instead of staying over time like usual to wait for Eddie. One day, Eddie purposely inquired Yun's father about why Yun always left so early now. Her father never really liked Eddie a lot because he found that Eddie would not be true to Yun. He actually thought that Yun and Michael were dating. Therefore, he boasted that Yun had a boyfriend. I remember how shocked Eddie became. He was completely taken by surprise. Then he asked who it was, and he then thanked Yun's father for supplying this information. Eddie never thought that Yun would ever date. I got the idea that he secretly thought that she was reserved for him.

Eddie and Michael had become friends too because Eddie was impressed by his intelligence and work ethic. Being with Michael was really awkward now that he knew about his relationship with Yun. One night when they were drinking at the bar, Michael's beeper beeped. The call was from Yun, and Eddie told him to reply to her. Michael did, and Eddie looked longingly at the phone. When Michael came back, he dared to ask Michael what Yun wanted. Michael told him, of course.

Also, a couple of times that Yun entered Eddie's office for business matters, Eddie tried talking to her but Yun left really fast. Another time, Eddie plucked up the courage to ask Yun to go out to dinner with him, but she declined. She said that she would eat some take out food. Eddie then said that he would eat take out food too. Yun apologized because she said she did not order any food for him. Then she left, and Eddie saw Michael bring the food for Yun. He closed the door behind him. I think at this point, Eddie knew he loved Yun undyingly.

At home, Yun's relationship reflected his condition. His mom noted that he could not eat or sleep. Of course, he refused to tell his mom anything. We know, though, that Eddie is seriously sad.

Finally, Eddie could not stand it anymore watching Michael go out with Yun. He was talking to a businessman when he saw Yun and Michael walking together in the forest. He could not even concentrate and decided to follow them. He became extremely furious when he saw Michael kiss Yun. Consequently, he waited by his car for Yun and Michael to come back. When they did, he grabbed Yun by the wrist and threw her in the car. He drove a long way before he stopped. Then he told Yun that he loved her a lot. She did not believe him, and he said that he was afraid to admit that he had truly fallen in love with her. They talked some more, and then Eddie smooched Yun in public. Michael saw this while driving by, and he was sad. Eddie and Yun then spent the night together.

With his love life settled, Eddie's family life eventually messed him up big time. Both Michael's parents and Eddie's parents finally confronted each other for some reason I have forgotten. Anyways, both the guys found out the truth. Eddie's father had raped Michael's mother after he found out that his wife was having an affair with the chauffeur back then, who happened to be Michael's father. Sum Sing Teen was drunk. Then, Michael's parents got together and hid from the Sum family for many years. Eddie's mother then had Eddie, and Michael's mother then had Michael. These guys were switched around.

After the truth was revealed, Eddie lost power in the family. His father sided with his sister and gave her a lot of important projects. Pretty much, Eddie was invisible. Instead, Sum Sing Teen wanted Michael to live at his house, which Michael reluctantly promised. He had an ulterior motive, though. He wanted to live here to get revenge.

Eddie coped with this treatment for a long time, but he erupted finally. No matter what he did now, Sum Sing Teen did not approve.

The turning point came when Eddie killed Michael's father (his own father basically). Michael's father constantly looked for him at the company, but Eddie did not want to be seen with this old man. He annoyed Eddie so much that Eddie, without thinking, ran him over with a car. He was so shocked and scared that he had actually killed someone. Little does he know that Michael's father had dropped something in his car accidentally.

After this incident, Eddie went to find Yun. He told her everything, and she wanted to tell the cops. After countless pleading, Yun promised to keep this secret for Eddie. Many times, she nearly revealed this secret to Michael, but Eddie was always there to intervene. Yun felt extremely guilty suppressing this information while Michael so fruitlessly searched for evidence. Michael did suspect Eddie eventually, and their friendship broke off. Even Yun and Michael were less of friends. Yun communicated less and less with her friend too. She always looked fatigued every time she came home from work.

Michael had, of course, given up on Yun after she got together with Eddie. He now dated Yun's friend, who had always liked him.

The second incident that changed Eddie's life was his murder of his mother (from the Sum family.) He had always respected and loved his mother, but he needed to kill her because she found out that he killed Michael's dad after she recognized his object in his car. Eddie tricked his mother that he would surrender to the police after spending one more day with her in the park. He wanted to videotape their last moments together. Eddie killed his mother when he put some poison in her drink, and pushed her into the water. Little does he know that he had videotaped the murder too.

Now Eddie had truly become a bad guy. He thought that he was safe now, and that no one would know his secret. He set about earning his father's trust for him. All Sum Sing Teen cared about was his business and money. Therefore, when Eddie became acquainted with a rich girl named Yue Wing Yee, Sum Sing Teen found an opportunity to expand his business.

Eddie purposefully met Wing Yee because he knew she was rich. He had a one-night stand with her, which would be useful to him later. Of course, Yun did not know about this, and Eddie would not tell her. Eddie, though, did not truly love Yee, for his true love was Yun. He was only using his body to do business with her.

Hence, Eddie struck a business deal with her, and Sum Sing Teen loved Eddie again. He dated Wing Yee while also dating Yun. He spent less time with her, but he would give her flowers too sometimes.

Eventually, Wing Yee demanded marriage from Eddie, and Eddie had to promise. With this marriage, the Sum company and the Yue company could combine and form one large company. Sum Sing Teen approved of this marriage obviously. Prior to Eddie's proposal to Wing Yee, Eddie already had proposed to Yun. Now he had to dump her.

I think that Yun found out about the marriage in the most horrible way. She heard with her own ears Eddie saying that Wing Yee and he would marry next month. This announcement was made in front of reporters with Yun and Michael standing in the midst. Eddie saw Yun, and his expression changed when he announced his marriage. He looked down, full of remorse. Yun then ran off, and Eddie saw again. He was hurt too in the heart.

The funny thing is that Eddie went looking for Yun a couple of days later to explain, and the funny thing is that Yun accepted his explanation after he kept talking and talking. Eddie, though, did not lie to her at all. They were OK again.

Somehow, Yun found the videotape of Eddie killing his mother. (I actually forgot.) She then told Eddie about it, and Eddie then became wary of Yun. He still loved her and did not want to kill her. Yun told Eddie to leave with her, but Eddie refused. He implored earnestly for Yun to give him the tape, but she refused.

Then, when she and him were walking on the cliffs one day, Eddie planned to kill her, as hurt as this decision did cause him. She turned her back to him, and started talking about something. He then placed his hand on her back and gently pushed. Yun would have fallen if Eddie had not held onto her. Eddie loved Yun too much to push her over. Yun knew that Eddie wanted to kill her. Eddie hugged Yun tightly and told her that he loved her.

Next time Eddie and Yun have their clandestine meetings, Yun tells Eddie that she will not leave and that she will burn the tape so that no one will ever find out. Eddie then asked if she would always be with him, and Yun said yes. This answer has another meaning though. Eddie then hugged her and spent the night with her. He was extremely happy that he would not have to harm Yun ever again. When Eddie was sleeping, Yun left and carried out her plan. The next day was Yee and Eddie's wedding.

The next day came. Before Eddie would walk up the aisle with Yee, he phoned Yun but no one answered. He then politely asked Michael to help check up on Yun, and Michael promised. His girlfriend helped out also.

While Eddie was getting married, Yun was overdosing herself with drugs. The camera keeps juxtaposing between Eddie's marriage and Yun's death. She could not quite finish burning the tape and dropped it under her bed. By the time Michael and his girlfriend arrived at her house, Yun was already dead.

Michael then went back to Eddie with a grim and mad expression on his face. He told Eddie that Yun was already dead, and he threw the letter that she had left for him. Eddie cried profusely while dancing with Yee, and thought about the letter.

Yun had written that she knew Eddie had wanted to kill her that day at the cliffs. She thanked him for not killing her, and she said that she hoped her name would sometimes appear in his heart when he would be thinking. Then she would be content. Yun died for Eddie and Yee, and Eddie would never get over her death.

Somehow, Sum Sing Teen had a stroke, and Eddie was left with the large business. After his honeymoon, he had visited Yun's grave, but Michael yelled at him to get lost. Eddie blamed Yun's death on Michael. Eddie could not find the tape.

Eddie did treat his wife well at first, but later, after he was done using her, he treated her bad. He yelled at her, and when he was celebrating one night after a successful business transaction, he became drunk and danced with Yee. He thought Yee was Yun and said that he missed her and that he sometimes felt the point of living with her death. He then hugged her, and Yee became really insulted and enraged. She knew now that Eddie did not really love her.

Yee then went out at night often. One night, when Eddie came home drunk, he screamed for Yee. She returned home then, and Eddie asked her where she had been. She said that he had no right to control her, and Eddie said he had every right because he was her husband. Somehow, he mentioned that Yun had sacrificed for him and that he did not truly love her. The only woman he ever loved was Yun. He told her that their marriage was a mere business deal!

Yee then gave up on Eddie and teamed up with Michael and his girlfriend to betray Eddie. They succeeded, but Yee was sacrificed because Eddie pushed her down the stairs after he found out that she was betraying him. Eeek! Eddie was ready to kill.

I forgot what happened to the tape, but I know that Yee woke up and told the police that Eddie tried to kill her. I think Michael's girlfriend found the tape when she was cleaning out Yun's room.

Eddie then went on the run because the cops were looking for him everywhere. He abducted Michael's girlfriend, and told Michael to give him a large sum of money in exchange for her. Eddie expressed to Michael the way he harmed him and made him lose everything. He said that if it were not for him, he and Yun would have been happily married and together.

In the end, Michael and Eddie got into a fight, but Eddie died since he is the villain of this show. He got trapped under some pillars, and an explosion killed him. Michael rescued his girlfriend, and they were happy together.

Ching Ching's Thoughts

I think that Eddie did not deserve to die or at least die in that brutal of a way because he was not that bad of a person. I think that if he actually loved someone so deeply as Yun, he could not be that bad. I don't know. That's what I think!

I think that Eddie, once again, did a superb job portraying a villain.

"Unreachable Zone of Darknes"s is a likeable series. Short but pretty good. For those of you who saw the series, The Intangible Truth, Yun was also in it. She was named Ying.
