Simon Yam starred as Bo in this emotional modern series concerning
life in the triad and the measurements of their loyalty for one
another. Bo is a small time gangster of a small group who was
betrayed by his dai gor [Leung Ga Yan]. As a result he
received a 12-year jail sentence.
12
years later and out of jail, he immediately went searching for
the guy who betrayed him. Bo's 12-year long bottled-up anger diminished
at the sight of the guy's children and his old girlfriend who
is now the bastard's wife and the bastard is now a physically
disabled dog who was badly beaten up for failing to pay the the
loan sharks the huge gambling debt he owed.
After that incident, Bo's elder brother wanted to help him change
his ways of living dangerously by opening a small music store.
Bo was helped by a childhood best friend, who anonymously sends
his triad brothers to buy Bo's cassette tapes.
They then started to hang out as family problems kept infuriating
Bo. Soon after, Bo is back on the streets. Gradually many triad
brothers would respect him and started calling gim Handsome Big
Brother Bo.
Now the bastard also wants to make more money. Eventually he
climbed to the top and wreaked havoc by backstabbing and finishing
off some high-ranked members and then came the death of his wife
[ Mimi Kung ]. Bo again served another long-term jail sentence.
After
getting out of jail. Bo had redeemed himself and decided to live
a non-slashing, normal life. Eventually the relationship between
him and his wife [ Yammie Nam ]
was also rekindled. His kid also started loving him. Poor (and
shame on the dude), [ Deric Wan ], who had effortlessly tried
to win her heart for many years while Bo
was in jail.
The part when Ah Bo drove off with his wife and kid in the white
van and that theme song [Song of Love by Dave Wong Kit] started
playing up left me some nostalgic feelings. Before they drove
off, the couple briefly joined lips probably to inform the audience
of their new happy life together and as a whole family has finally
begun at last.
The loyalty between the 3 triad brothers [ Canti Lau ], [ Simon
Yam ] and
[The half-European guy] is very deep and greatly performed by
the trio of course.
Perhaps the relevant loyalty theme of series was what attracted
me most
and is one of the factors that lead me to consider this to be
one of the modern classics.
Another modern classic would just have to be "Looking Back
In Anger" which "The Challenge of Life" which by
the way also share some similarities with "War of The Dragon."
These are a couple of tear-jerker dramas. If you haven't seen
"Looking Back In Anger," I suggest you to consider about
it because you'll be in for one hell of an emotional roller-coaster
ride.
*Clair's note - This is another Wai Ka Fai drama. Some of the
series under his name include - Looking Back in Anger, The Racing
Peak, The Greed of Man, Heaven's Retribution, and All Out of Love.
