Story

The universe consisted of three groups: Immortals, mortals, and devils. Every century, there was a duel between a representative from the realm of immortals and a rep from the realm of devils to determine who would be in charge of the universe. Each rep was selected from a realm of mortals (In other words, there was one mortal to fight for the immortals and one mortal to fight for the devils).

Because the devils lost every century, the head devil (Chu Teet Wah) decided to instill his devil seeds into a human being. That human being happens to be the wife of Do Fan Sin (Law Lok Lam), a good man who has the ability to fight the devils. The couple has a son together named Ah Yat (Roger Kwok). Later, the wife gets pregnant with a son of the head devil. The head devil planned it this way because he knew that Ah Yat was a rep for the immortals in the next duel of the century, so by making his son the rep for the devils, the brothers would be fighting and in turn, the universe would collapse and be his. The head devil has three devils working for him, Yeung Ma, Fat Ma, and Yum Ma (female). Do Fan Sin and the head devil eventually get into a fight, and while Do Fan Sin locked the head devil permanently into some trap that he can't get out of, he dies. The new born baby between his wife and the head devil, in the name of Ah Yuet (Dicky Cheung), is missing and so is Ah Yat.

A granny with high magical power, Popo, finds both babies, Ah Yat and Ah Yuet, and takes them and raises them with her own daughter, Kiu Kiu (Chan On Ying). After being raised in the mountains for 20 years, Ah Yat and Ah Yuet decide that it's their time to go on some fun adventures and explore the world, making endless troubles along the way. They ditch their moderator, Kiu Kiu, in the forest and start wandering around.

Ah Yat and Ah Yuet's first stop was the Emperor's Palace, purely out of curiosity, where they met Ching Ching (Carol Yeung). They somehow get involved in the crown prince's queer illness. After the two boys heal the prince (he was possessed by a devil) with the magical skills they have, the Emperor gives them the royal title "Yat Yuet San Hup" and a big house with lots of money.

Here comes an important and entertaining side character, in the name of Yin Pin Tin (Lau Ka Fai). He is a professional hitman who possesses high skills of kung fu and is quite willing to do anything as long as he gets paid. His first encounter with Ah Yat and Ah Yuet was during the days the brothers were ordered to find some sinners and execute them. Yin Pin Tin did all the dirty work for them and charged them high sums of money. They also took some flying lessons from him because they needed to escape from Kiu Kiu when she found them and tortured them for ditching her.

Yin Pin Tin later meets a woman thief named Kong Ling (Ng Wing Hung), who is brilliant and quick minded. They partner up to get some money but being a thief that she is, she takes off with all the money and he's after her. As she is being chased after by her enemies, Yin Pin Tin saves her and they somehow get together (it's mostly Kong Ling thinking that he likes her, but he's actually just a playboy). But after they spend a night together, Kong Ling mysteriously disappears.

Meanwhile, both Ah Yat and Ah Yuet fall in love with Ching Ching and do anything to impress her badly. Ching Ching is a rich, spoiled, high-nosed, stubborn brat who pretend not to like them but in fact, she likes Ah Yat. But Ching Ching has a fiance from her birth, and he is suppose to appear with a golden key to the lock that she has as an anklet. Though she realizes that, she forgets about it and goes on to like Ah Yat anyway.

By some coincidence, Ah Yuet, while being chased after by one of his enemies, meet two sisters (I'll call them Gold and Silver). The two girls decide it's their fate that he appeared before them, so they claim that he is their husband. Ah Yuet is absolutely horrified by the ugliness of Gold and Silver sisters, so he does whatever it takes to escape from them.

While in the process of running away from Gold and Silver, Ah Yuet coincidentally goes to the house of Yeung Ma, one of the three devils that worked for the head devil. Yeung Ma wants HIS son to be the representative of the devils so he controls his son to absorb Ah Yuet's energy because that will make his son stronger.

In the Heaven, the head God of the immortals sends a girl named Heung Yee to test and see if Ah Yat has the capability of becoming the next representative for the immortals. When Ah Yat finds out that Ah Yuet is in danger at Yeung Ma's house, he goes there to save Ah Yuet and Heung Yee helps him out. In the process of saving Ah Yuet, Yeung Ma's son dies and Yeung Ma escapes.

Skipping some time- Ching Ching and Ah Yat still fight but they do like each other. Ah Yuet has completely given up on getting together with Ching Ching and he is busy still trying to run away from Gold and Silver sisters. Then an event occurs- the crown prince whom the brothers saved in the beginning wants Ching Ching! She doesn't like the prince but the prince is determined to get her, so Ah Yat and Ah Yuet decide to play a trick and send Kiu Kiu to the palace instead. All goes well and the prince, who mistakes Kiu Kiu for Ching Ching (he didn't get to see what Kiu Kiu looked like at first), at last sees her ugliness and renounces his marriage to her. So Ching Ching is safely back to Ah Yat and they're happy, except Ching Ching is mad at him for no reason again and they get in a huge fight.

Yin Pin Tin, while wondering whatever happened to Kong Ling and kind of missing her, sees a gorgeous woman named Bing Yee (Lau Sau Ping). She is a wife of Fat Ma, the other one of the devils that worked for the head devil. Fat Ma captured her because he needed her to absorb her energy to make him be a stronger devil. Yin Pin Tin and Heung Yee (Chan Kit Yee - who appeared out of nowhere because she is after all the devils) both save Bing Yee from Fat Ma, and Yin Pin Tin and Bing Yee fall in love.

Fat Ma has a daughter, who later loses her memory temporarily. Ah Yat is the one to find her and he takes her to his home, but Ching Ching sees that and gets incredibly jealous and upset (remember, they're still fighting) and tells him that it's over between them. Ah Yat takes her home and names her Ding Ding (Chor Ka Po) and takes care of her. But he only likes her as a friend, while Ding Ding likes him otherwise.

Ding Ding finds her memory back soon and goes home.

Later on, Fat Ma captures Ching Ching to replace Bing Yee's role of getting him energy. Ah Yat finds that out and goes to Fat Ma's house and informs Ding Ding that her father is a devil. While in the process of rescuing Ching Ching, Fat Ma attacks Ah Yat but Ding Ding blocks him and dies instead. Yin Pin Tin and Heung Yee together kill Fat Ma soon after.

By this time, the duel of the century is very nearly approaching and it's Ah Yuet's time to almost turn into a devil because he was born with devil's seeds. Heung Yee recognizes this and tries to kill Ah Yuet, but when Ah Yat finds out, he claims that Ah Yuet is his brother, that they have a same mother, and they grew up together. Ah Yat tells Heung Yee that if she wants to kill Ah Yuet, she'll have to kill him first.

When Ah Yuet realizes that he is set to be a devil, he begs his brother to kill him. Ah Yat can only cry and mourn and he tries to find a way to block Ah Yuet from turning into a devil but there is no way except to kill him. Meanwhile, the head devil who is trapped, orders the last of his personnels, Yum Ma (female devil), to bring his son to rescue him. Yum Ma captures Ah Yuet and he finally does turn into a devil.

Ah Yat and Ah Yuet are both after the Yat Yuet Sword (Sun & Moon). Ah Yat needs the sword to kill the head devil and Ah Yuet needs it to rescue his father from the wall he's trapped in. Ah Yuet is the one to get it, and in the process, he almost kills Ah Yat. At this point, he has completely turned into a devil. Ah Yat is injured badly but Heung Yee dedicates all of her energy to save him. Heung Yee instead, becomes decapitated but since she was immortal to begin with, she goes back to Heaven she came from.

Ah Yat and Ah Yuet finally fight together, but since Ah Yat represents the 'good' side, he is obviously stronger. Ah Yat takes away the sword from Ah Yuet and beats him to death. The moment he tries to kill Ah Yuet, Ah Yuet says "Don't, we are brothers, remember? We grew up together!" Ah Yat thinks of all the memories they shared together and they hug each other, but Ah Yat still stabs him to save the universe.

The head God and Heung Yee from Heaven tell Ah Yat that Ah Yuet would reincarnate, because of the devil's blood he had spilled when Ah Yat killed him. What he needs is a special blood transfusion, which only Yin Pin Tin can do. So Ah Yat takes Ah Yuet's dead body to Yin Pin Tin and begs him to transfer his blood to Ah Yuet but he refuses at first, thinking that he might die from it instead. He wouldn't even listen to Bing Yee's persuasion. But when he sees that the head devil has taken over the universe, he gives his blood to Ah Yuet and Ah Yuet reincarnates.

Together, Ah Yat and Ah Yuet partner up to power up their energy and the sword gets divided into two (That's why it's called Twin Swords ^^ ). They fight against the head devil together and finally win, thus restoring the peace in the universe.

In the end, Ah Yat and Ching Ching finally decide to get married. Yin Pin Tin and his love Bing Yee attend the wedding, but at that moment, Kong Ling appears out of nowhere, pregnant! Yin Pin Tin freaks out when he sees her, and Bing Yee and Kong Ling both freak out at each other. The baby is obviously Yin Pin Tin's and the three don't know what to do, so he takes off with Bing Yee and Kong Ling goes after him.

Ah Yuet, who is in a really good mood, announces that he will finally marry Gold and Silver sisters when Ah Yat's wedding is over. But at the moment the wedding begins, a mysterious figure appears and claims that he is Ching Ching's fiance!

That is the end of Mystery of the Twin Swords I. To be continued in II.

Thoughts

The most notable concept of this series is, as the title almost suggests, the 'brotherhood.' Roger & Dicky as brothers... they were indeed 'tight.' It is no wonder that the two actors have remained as my favorites ever since I first saw this series.

This was one of the better series in the early 90's that made an attempt of using special effects without making everything look so computerized or fake. Both major and minor characters had interesting stories alike, although the Gold & Silver sisters annoyed me to a certain extent. Towards the end, the drama builds up and the emphasis on Roger/Dicky brotherhood becomes prominent, making some scenes particularly touching. My favorite scene is where Roger is about to stab Dicky and Dicky says 'we're brothers' but Roger stabs him anyway. =_= But it was a huge relief that Dicky lived again!

I know that majority of the people find part II more interesting but as far as my favorite onscreen duo is concerned, I'd have to say this one beats part II because it had more screen time for the two guys and not their love stories (although that was very fun to watch too).
