Story

Fa Yuet Lo (Jamie Chic) was the student/left hand woman of the leader of "Li Fa" Palace (Chan Mei Kei). The leader was obsessed with a handsome young man named Kong Fung (Miu Kiu Wai) she had saved at one point, but he fell in love with Yuet Lo. So the two eloped, but they were eventually captured.

Yuet Lo happened to be giving birth to her twin sons. Afterwards, Yuet Lo and Kong Fung both died mysteriously because they were poisoned beforehand by their servant, Kong Kum. In order to avenge her shame, the leader of Li Fa took one of the twin boys with her and named him Fa Mo Kuet. Her plan was to have the two boys grow up and meet under a circumstance where they don't know each other, and kill each other off.

The other boy was taken in by Yin Nam Tin, the sworn brother of Kong Fung. But when he stepped into the valley of evil people upon hearing the info that the murderers of Kong Fung and Yuet Lo were there, he was attacked and became crippled by the evil people. Those evil people eventually raised the boy themselves, and named him Siu Yu Yee (Little Fish).

20 years later, Siu Yu Yee (Tony Leung) got out to the real world. Siu Yu Yee had always been a smart troublemaker. He met Teet Sum Lan (Kitty Lai) from another country, and she was being chased by Cheung Ching (Eugina Lau). It was because Sum Lan's dad, Teet Chin (Ng Man Tat), was condemned for killing the king of that country, and Cheung Ching was the princess so she was going after Sum Lan.

Siu Yu Yee then coincidentally met Fa Mo Kuet (Hugo Ng), feeling some vague familiarity about him. Siu Yu Yee and Mo Kuet both helped Sum Lan by settling the matter. Cheung Ching then fell in love with Mo Kuet upon seeing how graceful and well-mannered he was, but he happened to like Sum Lan so she got very jealous. Yet Sum Lan liked Siu Yu Yee, which made Mo Kuet very sad. But eventually, Sum Lan realizes how great Mo Kuet's love is for her, so she accepts him.

Then they all met Siu Ying (Tse Ling). Siu Ying was the adopted daughter of Wai Mo Yee (Wong Wun Choi). Wai Mo Yee was the right hand man of the leader of Li Fa 20 years ago but he had a crush on her, and as a consequence, he was beaten up and kicked out of the palace. He taught Siu Ying the way to beat the Li Fa kung fu which Mo Kuet used. He also ordered Siu Ying to protect Siu Yu Yee no matter what, just to go against the leader of Li Fa in her plans. So Siu Ying always saves Siu Yu Yee from trouble, and she eventually claims him as 'hers,' much to the nightmare of Siu Yu Yee.

Kong Yuk Long (Eddie Kwan) was the son of Kong Kum (Yeung Jak Lam), the servant that initially poisoned Siu Yu Yee & Mo Kuet's parents 20 years ago. He had changed his name later and made a name for himself in the martial world. Yuk Long was set out to find the treasures upon his father's order and meets Siu Yu Yee. Yuk Long is very annoyed with Siu Yu Yee because he's too smart and he figures out every move that Yuk Long plans to harm him.

Yuk Long later meets Cheung Ching, gets her pregnant, hence becomes her husband but is soon kicked out again. He eventually gets 'eaten' by his father Kong Kum because Kong Kum was practicing some kung fu that required flesh-eating of his relatives.

In the end, as the leader of Li Fa planned, Siu Yu Yee and Mo Kuet is set to fight in a duel. One has to kill each other in order to discover the 'secret' as to why they should fight. So Siu Yu Yee fakes his death and finds out that he is the twin brother of Mo Kuet. When Siu Yu Yee wakes up, the leader of Li Fa runs off screaming, having her revenge fail like that. She suddenly grows old and ugly (I guess it was the stress haha). Later she is killed by Kong Kum.

The final battle is set between Siu Yu Yee/Mo Kuet, and Kong Kum. But Kong Kum's kung fu is too strong to beat, but Siu Ying comes just in time to save them, thus, a happy ending!

Thoughts

There is no known English title for this series, but many refer to it as "The Two Honourable Knights" or "The Twins."

Based on the famous novel written by Gu Lung, this series was one of the most popular series in 1988. This version is actually a remake of the 70's version starring Wong Yeun Sun as Little Fish & Sek Sau as the white-clothed-elegant twin brother. The '99 remake of 'The Twins' starred Jimmy Lin & Alec Su, playing Little Fish & Fa Mo Kuet respectively. My assumption, however, is that since the 70's version is a bit too dated back and the '99 version is still new, the '88 version is probably the most well-remembered reproduction of this novel among the TVB viewers.

Hugo Ng, if my memory serves me correct, was fairly new at the time and the role of Fa Mo Kuet was the first major role he took in a series. He is actually my favorite male character, rather than the quick and astute Little Fish (although he does come close second ^^). I tend to have this thing for cold-faced-warm-heart guys, but then again, I'm not sure what Fa Mo Kuet's character really is supposed to be like. I can only draw the conclusion that he'd be nitpicky and sensitive as he grew up surrounded by all those women.

Little Fish, just like the other leading characters in Gu Long novels, is never the type to 'lose' in any circumstances. There is much humor to be appreciated in his brazen and almost impudent nature of getting away with virtually anything he does anywhere. Only in one situation he felt very depressed and ashamed of himself that he refused to live on - that was when Kitty's character took off her clothes in front of Hugo to let him escape.

Speaking of Kitty, I've heard some people mention that they didn't like how 'weak' her character was. Weak as in physical strength, I must agree - her level of kung fu was the weakest out of all of the characters. But Kitty in fact was a very strong-willed woman and I can only say that because stripping in front of the guy who likes her to save the guy she likes is a very brave thing to do. I also thought that her attempt to depart this world upon Hugo's death (yet to occur) required some courage. I was so glad that she didn't continue to pursue Tony otherwise this would've been a drag. >=(

Eddie Kwan, as funny and young he was, surely didn't leave me a good impression. He was one of those that can't possibly earn him any sympathy. Well, except when he was eaten by his own father; I bet he didn't have that in his plan. =_= But at times, his attempts to bring Tony down came across so hilarious that I couldn't really hate him.

I can also remember this series as the only series that Tse Ling didn't play a supporting actress of Kitty. In many other series like 'The Legend of Dik Ching,' 'The War Heroes,' 'Lin Shing Kuet,' and 'Withered in the Wind,' it was always Kitty that played the leading actress but this time, it was the opposite.

I guess the little things I found were funny. Whenever Chan Mei Kei made her appearance, it was done so 'fancy.' The carpets rolled before her feet and all those curtains and lute playing and flying in the air, dude! No need for an airplane that way, I presume. Okay I shut up now.
