Synopsis

I do not recall Jimmy's character in this series at all. Very faintly, I remember him as a monk in the Southern Shaolin Temple, and yes, he was a bad guy again.

Basically, the series starts out with Amy Kwok and Li Ning, but Amy Kwok dies early in the series and Li Ning becomes one of the 18 iron men in Shaolin.

Bak Sai Fun (Deric Wan). He is interested in learning kung fu but he is rather a troublemaker.

In some occasion he meets Duen Mok Kiu (Gigi Lai) and Hung Dai (Eddie Cheung). They are brothers and sisters, but not blood related because Hung Dai's mom was remarried to Kiu's dad. Kiu's real older brother (Michael To) always picks on Hung Dai, but Kiu treats him kindly.

Mung Sak (Noel Leung) is Bak Sai Fun's love interest. She is young and charming, but she holds a secret that no one knows about.

Lau Ka Fai is the monk who later takes in Hung Dai as his disciple, when Hung Dai gets himself into trouble and decides to throw away all the hatred in his heart and become a monk. But Hung Dai didn't like the way things were in Shaolin, so he corrupts again, later meets the leader of the Sun Moon Sect named Hoi Ming, and marries her. Hoi Ming gives birth to his son but some trouble comes in between and they are separated for many years. Hoi Ming later rediscovers Hung Dai as a beggar in the streets, and takes him back in. Hung Dai thus reunites with his wife and son.

Sai Fun and Mung Sak like each other, but Kiu also likes Sai Fun. She does a lot of sacrifice for Sai Fun that wouldn't be acknowledged, because Sai Fun will always love Mung Sak.

The bad guy here is this governor named Yin Kon. He is after one of the 2 booklets that are treasures of Shaolin Temple. That booklet is supposed to make anyone younger and healthier, and guarantees longer life. (Amy Kwok in the beginning was actually one of his assassins). His wife was Mung Sak, but Mung Sak escaped from him with the booklet and used it to make herself younger. So in reality, she is at least a decade older than Sai Fun, but Sai Fun doesn't know that.

Yin Kon is now after Mung Sak to reclaim the booklet. The Sun Moon Sect is under his orders and Hoi Ming, the leader, captures Mung Sak. But because Hung Dai and Sai Fun are friends, Sai Fun asks Hung Dai to convince his wife to let go of Mung Sak. Unable to grant this request, Hung Dai is trapped in decisions. Sai Fun rescues Mung Sak from the Sun Moon Sect, but as a price, the whole sect is wiped out by Yin Kon and Hoi Ming is also killed.

Hung Dai avenges for his wife's death and the sect by killing Yin Kon, but he also is killed during this process. The mystery of the booklet is revealed, as Mung Sak suddenly grows really old, surprising Sai Fun. But Sai Fun tells her that no matter how old/ugly she looks, he will still love her. When she turns down his love for her, he goes to Shaolin and becomes a monk, leaving Kiu crying in grief because she also loved him.

This was a rough summary of this series, I left out a bunch of details so go rent it right now and see it for yourself! :)

Allow me to get side-tracked for a moment here, even though this is a page devoted to Jimmy. I couldn't help but to notice how appealing Eddie Cheung's character was. I didn't like anyone from that series except Eddie.

He was a good guy in his heart, but in order to live as a good guy, the world was too cruel to him. His ending scene was so touching because his little son later came back with his corpse on his horse. And I liked the girl who played his wife, they were both good and too bad they had to be killed off. Her role was probably the most significant role she has ever played, I usually see her as less than 'minor' characters in other series.

Deric Wan. I have not much to say. His role just ticked me off and I was upset that he didn't like Gigi Lai back (I actually liked her in this one somewhat). This was the only series I didn't like Noel Leung in, because as much as I like her, her role wasn't all that endearing. Noel herself was actually quite sweet, but I didn't like how her presence inadvertently caused the grief of those around her. What I didn't understand was how it was possible for her to fall in love with Deric, when she was at least 5-10 years older than him in her real age. If her appearance was young, would that also mean she could have a young mind to pursue younger guys? X_X Also, why did she refuse Deric when he said he'd still be with her even if she's old (and ugly)?

Sigh- Eddie, if only he hadn't been killed off.
