This series is special to me in many ways because 1. it was the
very first series I saw Jimmy in and 2. I didn't like him AT ALL
back in those days. His character is not all that endearing as you
would've noticed. Took a while to convince me that he could actually
play good and heroic roles....
Basic storyline - Lung Gim Sang (Eddie Kwan) and Tin Heung (Ada
Choi) have been household enemies for generations. While Gim Sang
is easy going, Tin Heung is ambitious and thinks of beating Gim
Sang's household at any given moment.
Gim Sang meets a girl named Ling Fung (Elvina Kong) whom he thought
was a guy at first, but after it is discovered that she is not,
they fall in love. However, Ling Fung is engaged to a sleaze bag
named Yat Fei (Jimmy Au), who flirts with Tin Heung a lot.
Then there is Fa Wan (Lau Ka Fai) who seeks revenge for being
forced out of the martial world. Gim Sang falls off a cliff when
Fa Wan attacks him, and loses his memory. He meets Ching Ching
(Catherine Hung) who takes care of him, and the two both fall
in love. But later, he is caught in a dilemma because he gains
his memory back. It is also discovered that Ching Ching is Fa
Wan's long lost daughter... sometime before Gim Sang lost his
memory, he unintentionally got Ling Fung pregnant and everything
is just a huge mess.
In the end, Tin Heung succeeds in learning the kung fu that would
surely beat Gim Sang BUT! How the hell did she lose anyway? After
all this ordeal, Gim Sang, Ling Fung, and Ching Ching all live
happily ever after, oh joy.
This series is NOT to be confused with "Buddha's Magic Palm"
or something like that, an 80's series starring Jamie Chic, Susanna
Au Yeung Pui San, and Ng Man Tat. They share the basic storyline
somewhat, but "The Buddhist Palm..." is much more light-hearted,
comical, and plain silly.
This of course is not Eddie's (or Jimmy's) best series. In fact,
Eddie looks quite ugly here because he is always making goofy,
horny faces. We can also see Ada at a tender age of 20, already
having mastered the art of looking incredibly evil.
I didn't like Catherine in this series, even though one cannot
blame her for getting it on with Gim Sang's character after he
loses memory. If bi/polygamy wasn't so common in the ancient world,
I think she should have stepped aside quietly and let him live
with Ling Fung and their baby...
You can enjoy many more Eddie/Jimmy duo where Eddie is the good
guy and Jimmy is the bad guy. Ada & Catherine also co-star
and fight for one man in "All About Tin." The themesong
for "The Buddhist Palm..." is sung by Jacky Cheung.
